Title: Urban Infrastructure Expanding into the Ocean: Technology Strategy of the Floating Infrastructure Research Group

1. Why Is Floating Infrastructure Necessary? More than 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, while land that is actually habitable by humans accounts for less than 1% of the total area. Available land resources are becoming increasingly limited, and the ocean is no longer merely a boundary but a viable space for development. Climate change, urban overcrowding, and sea-level rise have clearly exposed the limitations of conventional land-based infrastructure systems. Urbanization continues unabated. It is projected that 68% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, and South Korea has already surpassed a 90% urban population ratio. In high-density coastal urban areas, demand for new infrastructure is rapidly increasing, while existing infrastructure foundations are becoming progressively more vulnerable......
